Armed with that information they can either sell the devices or use them themselves thus they only sell devices that either 1: are sold for more than they will ever produce, or 2: are volume beyond what the manufacturer can use themselves. These devices are only made by a handful of companies and they have a pretty darn good idea of how much they will make over their lifetime. Great, so you just buy one of these, right? Nope, that way sorrow lies, too.

It's not uncommon for devices to be able to run at 10,000 times the speed of your Macbook Pro while not consuming that much more electricity. A $5 device that runs at 2.5 Watts will outpace a flagship GPU and even that won't make any money. Here's the current state of the mining ecosystem: people have developed purpose-built computers that blow CPUs and GPUs out of the water so badly that it isn't even funny.

It's not an issue of whether you have a Mac, or even an issue of the fact that you're using a CPU/GPU. It's not an issue with whether or not you pay for your electricity. Note how I don't include any qualifiers in that statement. Other comments are tiptoeing around that simple fact. The most cost efficient thing to buy is nothing, because everything else makes you lose money.
